VIIT has a network of over 200 computers powered with Gigabit Fiber Optic Backbone and 100 Mbps Intel switches.
This is a Heterogeneous Network Environment. Linux being the most common system in the server room and Windows on the client side.

Features:-

1. Mail: An electronic mail account is set up for every student and staff member. Even parents and friends of the student can contact them using a unique email facility on this web site. Such mails will directly go to the Student mailbox on his/ her desktop computer. Both POP3 and IMAP are supported by the mail server.

2. Development: Apart from the softwares installed on each computer students have allocated space on the server. This space includes their home directories, spsce on web servers and space for IMAP folders. Students may store personal Web pages on the Intranet Web servers. These web technologies include JSP, Servlet, beans, PHP and ASP. All student computers, offices and classrooms have access through the high-speed Ethernet, to the campus network and all residence halls have direct Ethernet access to the network with a port available for each student and additional ports located in many lounges and study areas.

3. Internet Access: The Institute curently has high speed leased line Internet access. VIIT can be ranked among the most wired Institue in India.

4. Computer Labs: There are five Computer Labs at VIIT with 30 computers in each Lab. Network and Intranet connectivity is available to all the Labs and Student's Hostels. The Labs are available for use for 24 Hours to the students..

5. Access @ hostels: All student computers, offices and classrooms have access through the high-speed Ethernet, to the campus network and all residence halls have direct Ethernet access to the network with a port available for each student and additional ports located in many lounges and study areas.

Server Details:-


We have 6 Compaq Proliant 3000, 2500 and 1600 Servers with Xeon processors, 128 MB RAM, 18.2 GB SCSI Hard Disks and HP’s DAT drives for Backup. These servers serve as LDAP, Web, Mail, FTP, Database servers apart from normal file and print services.

LDAP+Samba Server:

This the main Samba file server holds home directories of all the network users. This Server keeps the security information in a LDAP database based on OpenLDAP, in turn provides authentication information to all other servers. This makes administration centralized and easy.

OS: Red Hat Linux with Samba 2.2.x

Database & DHCP Server:

This Server serves as a database Server. The Database software is Oracle.
This Server serves as backend of many intranet sites and applications.All the students have their own account on this server. This account is syncornized with their network logins.
This Server provides IP addresses dynamically to client machines in order to participate on Network.

Web Server [ERP]:

VIIT has developed many software inhouse to fullfill it's own requirement. VIIT ERP System is one major Software developed at VIIT. This entire project is web based and is hosted on the this Apache Web Server dedicated for the ERP. Front end is developed using PHP which is a great, very fast language for Server Side Scripting. The database backend used is Postgres.

OS: Red Hat Linux with Apache

Web Server [IIS]:

This is Windows 2000 based IIS 5.0 [Internet Information Server] Intranet Web Server. This is also MS-Sql Server for holding databases for students. Again all the students account on this server is sycronized with their network logins.
All the sites developed by students using Active Server Pages (ASP) technology are hosted here. At the time of making this web site this server is holding more than 50 web sites developed by our students.

Also a share is dediacated on this server for the applications developed by the students.

Mail, DNS & Proxy Server:

This Server is VIIT’s Gateway to Internet.This Server is connected with high speed ISDN lines to Internet. All the students and staff get access throught this server. Server scripts are written to automate the process of Internet access. At specified times these scripts acticates and provide Internet connectivity to only computers specified in the script to ensure everybody get enough acces to Internet and on right time.
For email access this Server is connected to the 64K leased line at VIIT Internet Center, Baramati through an exclusive RAS connection.
This Server also provide a unique Intranet email ids to all the students and VIIT staff. Students as well as VIIT staff can communicate with each other and with their families and friends using email.
This Server also function as Domain Name Server to support Intranet sites.

OS: Red Hat Linux with Squid, iptables and bind.

Apart from all this this server is used for storing online books for students named as e-library. So all the books and other information stored on this Server is accessible to each and every student of VIIT.

IBM, Compaq PCs, assembled PIII / PIV and AMD Athlon machines are used as nodes. Other accessories include printers, scanners, web-cams, modems, CD-Writers etc.
